Several non-governmental organisations have come to villagers’ rescue in areas recently hit by flooding.
A total of 29 families from Madzivazvido under Chief Nenyunga had their houses destroyed by the floods. Others were picked up from flood zones along the Sengwa River by Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopters.
The Midlands Civil Protection Unit provincial committee, which responded quickly to the disaster, also sent all-terrain vehicles to ferry victims to temporary shelters at Nenyunga Primary School.
According to Midlands Provincial Administrator, Cecilia Chitiyo, the exact damage to infrastructure and livestock is yet to be ascertained. It is believed that other families from parts of Binga were also affected by the flooding.
Gokwe North District Administrator, Fortunate Mupinga, told The Zimbabwean that the donor community had reached the flood victims with food aid.
“Though temporary shelters had been made, the most pressing challenge was how to feed the affected families,” she said. “Their food reserves had been swept away so they were desperate,” she added.
Mupinga singled out Christian Care, Red Cross, International Organisation for Migration and the World Food Programme as organisations that had assisted the families.
